I was hoping to give you a little bit of a race but I think ShieldMaiden is about finished.

At best I can only manage 2-3 hours a day. Plus I die too often. I would be at 3.3 already if I han't died 3 or 4 times. I do have a plan to work CtA back into my setup. As for a race, I couldn't come close to competing. The only reason I almost, but not quite, beat grogs to 98 is that I started pushing through 97 while he was still 95 - 96.

For now, I will have to be satisfied with being the highest non-teleprting char.

Or maybe not. I just can't stand to let ShieldMaiden sit at 98, it bugs me that she's so close (3000 runs ) and it will probably continue to bug me until I do it. Anyways, for me, its a minimum of 3 months.

May I ask how old you are DC? 11 hours a day, and this being summer, I'm assuming you're a teenage, without a job.

iirc, it took me just on 5 months from 98 - 99. I played pretty solidly, about 4 hours a day weeknights and 8ish weekends. Then again I did die 4 times in that level..... something you don't have the luxury of doing

@jjscud, that was a good little struggle there for a while, I always thought it a shame you didn't keep going, as it was that competitive motivation that was lacking in my run (I just kept going because I was stubborn, but I didn't enjoy it much after you dropped out).

Ok, here's my gear, its a bit odd but it works quite well. Basically I have an offensive switch and a defensive switch.

Helm: Shako (-5/+4 lit res jewel)
Armor: Tals Armor (ias/lit res jewel)
Gloves: Lancers gauntlets of Alacicity (sp??)
boots: Silkweave
belt: TGods/Razortail
Amulet: Mara's (27%)
Ring 1: Ravenfrost
Ring 2: rare (6%ml, 14%fire res, 27% Lit res, 24% Poison res)

Defensive switch:
Demon's Arch
Stormshield (Um'ed)

Offensive switch:
Titan's (up'ed, 199 ED)
Trollnest (2x ias jewel, 5/5 lit facet)

Charms:
3x Harpoonist of Inertia
3x Harpoonist of Vita
2x Harpooist of Balance
5x Shimmering SC
11% poison res SC
11% fire res all CS
(several of the SC also have life)


I use the defensive switch down until I clear the throne room (Demon's Arch is great for Gloams) then I switch to the offensive setup and quickly replace the TGods with the Razortail.

Also that is how my gear stands as of my last run, I just tradeed for a nice 3os Head Hunters Glory that will give me the ability to max my resists in the offensive setup. I will probably put CtA on switch if I do that.

@corrupted: I just realized, I never use Stormshield while fighting the minions so I change what I said yesterday, I don't think its really all that important.

One last question i think

I assume you run there on players 1 , do you do the first 2 waves on p1 also ?

Definately run there on p1, but I do all waves on p8. Everything dies to lightning except when Bartuc and Lister spawn with specific mods. I still kill Bartuc when he's LI but I park Lister if he's LI.

Well, I already started in the MFO but I figured I'd just update my exp as per pre-MFO.

I have two character stuck at level 84 and my Barbarian just hit 85. I feel like he could go to 99. I might as well enter even though im still at a low level.

Meteorb hit level 92 by doing /players3 Baalruns the players setting for a balance between items and experience. I continued to do some /players1 Pindleskinruns with her, not having found any new set items nor any TC87 unique items, with the result of first dying, but having just gained a level, not losing much experience and easily gaining back more, and then indeed finding a set item (Sazabi's Cobalt Redeemer). Now I'm a bit in doubt whether to continue running Pindleskin for items or Baal for experience, I'll probably start with some Countessruns with the hope of finding the elusive mal before deciding.

Hey folks! My character is level 92 atm. I thought I would be closer to level 93 by now but 3 deaths within a couple days made me lose lots of experience. I'm slowly getting into it again but a I'm a little discouraged. This is my highest character and I do want to get to the highest level. I was wondering what keeps you motivated to get to level 99. Thanks!

I am now exactly 50% from 98-99... continue solid playing like this and it won't be too long now... though I'm getting scared and keep seeing myself dying 1 million before 99...

That is just absolutley awesome DC. My hat is off to you:shocked:

3 minutes per run. Tele straight to throne, first 2 waves on P1, then the last 3 waves on P8, and Baal on P3.

The second pack is cold immune and high HP. That makes them very hard for a cold sorc to take down (impossible with blizzard). Some are blizzballer hybrids (tweety and DC) and some are pure and use CE charges off of a bonehew, but even still, its very difficult at p8. The first pack gives very little expirience so the best exp/time seems to be what DC has below for a Blizz or Blizzballer sorc.

Going for Baal soon, the Sorceress is a little stalled at the moment. (Weird connection problems between me and DX.)

Decided to remake my sorceress so "Joy" will be retired at this point. It will be a while before I can add my new one to this list. Good luck to you all in reaching lvl 99.

3/4 through 98. Phew, that's a lot of playing... and more to come till that end goal!

Right-Oh. Julius is on his way to 99, even I didn't think I'd be silly enough to do it again, but here we are. During the course of the next 5000+ runs I hope to get Tyraels and Death's Web to round out my grail.........

Yeppers! My blizz sorc is almost 94 (no where near 99, but maybe one day) and aman gave me a great tip which someone else used to get to 99 (maybe grogs, I'm not sure) to use a double Hel'ed Bonehew for the CE on the second wave. It works GREAT! Its much faster for that wave than static/merc kill. I use it sometimes to help clear the throne room or on a CI Lister.

No offence meant, but its generally advisable to gain a few more levels before you join the list. Level 90 is a common starting point. I'm sure lvl 90 may sound high but it really is just the beginning. The list is long enough with just lvl 90 and above characters. There is no real restriction but historically, there's only been about 1 character that was added before level 90 that ever got anywhere interesting.

@Suiling - sorry about your loss, good to see you got to remove CoS's char too.

I had my Meteorb up to Lvl 89, and had to delet her

I will put a character up there... But I don't know which build I want to use for that many Hell Baal runs... So, let me get some wealth and a couple Mats/Pats, and I will post one of my chars for the hunt to 99.

Hmmm, allow as in just sit back and watch, no. (and only DC has passed me by at 98, and I didn't have a chance there.)

So Grogs, we had a fun little race to 98 a while ago, my headstart wasn't quite enough. I know this isn't technically a race, but with how fast you move and me picking up me pace again, this could be close. If nothing else, a little bit of mutual motivation, and this time its the big one.

So Grogs, we had a fun little race to 98 a while ago, my headstart wasn't quite enough. I know this isn't technically a race, but with how fast you move and me picking up me pace again, this could be close. If nothing else, a little bit of mutual motivation, and this time its the big one.

We didn't plan anything together, I originally planned to have my sorceress as my shot for 99 and MP'ing as much as possible. I initially ran together with the Wolfbarb but DX got tired of it (Due to IM deaths.) so he went ahead and rebuild his hammerdin with shermo's enigma.

Grogsy, 98-99 took me just about a month, but the character was born sometime in April, so the total journey took a lot longer (although I didn't get serious till 96-97) than 1 month...

Finally 97 after a long weekend with DX. Highlights include a near perfect Nigtwings (15/20/9/112), Stormlash and Ist.

I know it only looks like 5 million, however, I was at 2.771 and died, losing 24 million (4 hours of work). I was teleporting through the throne (remember, w naj's staff).

Now, I don't teleport in the throne when there are gloams there. I didn't see any, so I teleported, and got smacked with LR. No biggie. Well, until I teleported into a nice Gloam boss pack just at the lower right of the chamber. WHAM! 2600 HP gone. Not suprising considering I had -80 LR at the time.

So really, over the past few days I've earned closer to 29 million, and all I have is 5 to show for it. As for 97, I've got 201 million XP and 33 hours of game time to go.

The thing that really annoyed me was that I wanted to get to 99 with this char not dying

I don't think I will join with my Meteorb... The skills just aren't synergized enough to make the runs fast...

My scheduled list of chars to make include 2x Amazons (ImmoZon and FrostMaiden), 1x Assassin (Natalya's Ghost), 2(maybe 3)x Barbs (Frenzy, Conc, and WW if I get Full IK Set), 1x Druid (Fury/Fireclaw), 1x Necro (Don't really like them, but I want 1 of each char, so I'm going w/ a Skelliemancer), 2x Pally (Avenger and Fanatic Zealot, which doesn't require very many Skill Pts, but adding Holy Shield and it's synergy pretty much max's it out), and 5x Sorcs (Meteorb, Blizzballer, Light, Blizzy, and a Melee Enchantress, again doesn't require many Skill Pts... She should be fun )

Soooo, as you can see, I have a lot going on in my D2 Career Plans...

I will probably add the Pure Single Elem. Sorcs for the quest to 99, and perhaps other High Speed/High Dmg chars...

Here's the general breakdown on /pX settings.

If I remember correctly, it takes 165 pindle runs on p8 to level from 89 to 90.
I think it might be a good idea to start baaling on lvl 92, because pindle starts to give little xp. from lvl 92.

At lvl 93, your clvl is split between Baal's mlvl and the minion's mlvl. That's where I would start. Then again, baal drops are 2x better than pindle drops, if you can kill baal in just another 20 seconds I would do it just for the drops.

Of course the lvl 98 response would be, its all negligble until you reach the upper 90s.

True, I forgot that you only get like 7% (IIRC) of the experience when you are that high in CLvl...

Scroll down some to the clvl 70+ table. I'm more concerned with those above 90, and then, really with those at 96 and above (because that's where real leveling starts).

Also, as you notice, that there is an additional penalty for XP from monsters that is dependant on your clvl and their mlvl. In otherwords, at clvl 98, you get .59% * 5% of the experience gained from minions. That means you're getting .0295% of the experience you gain. (For every 10k xp you get, you get actually earn 3 of it, approximately).


That's the reason why it takes 3500 baal runs (all at /p8, /p3 baal), or 3900 with cold-based sorceresses to get to 99.

The penalties are extreme.

I think it depends on your character, because even at /p8 the minions are easy to kill for a blizzard sorceress and not really time consuming. I can run baal at about 4 to 5 minutes with my pure blizz sorc, but that time is really long for 99, so i will build a blizzballer soon.
Btw, does anybody know why baal does not give more exp at players settings higher than 3? (Also he does not exactly give 2x exp. of /p1 at /p3. )

Yes it is slow, here are my numbers from full p8 runs:

exp from minions ~36,000
exp from baal ~ 48,000
exp per run ~84,000
Total runs 3464

Here's what figured when I first hit 98. Somewhere I've posted the exact breakdown by minion pack but it wasn't in this thread.

If you run at p1, you've got to divide that 36K by 4.5 so only 8K. That's about 1/3 of your experience per run. I believe that means you've got to be able to complete a run 33% faster than doing minions at p8 (I may be off on the percent but 3 p1 baal runs = 2 p8 baal runs at 98). I doubt that much time would be gained for most baal runners.

I'm thinking about adding my blizz sorc here, there are a few things I'd like to know first though.

What do you (Cold-, Cold/Fire sorcs) do when lister is cold/fire immune? Park him or let merc take care of him?

If you let your merc handle him, what gear does your merc wear?

I'm getting a CI/FI Lister about 1/3 of the time. He takes forever for my merc to kill.
I don't like parking him since that usually involves killing the monsters that are just outside the throne room (runs take longer) so I tried a few different approaches.

1. Give my merc some different gear, namely Guillaumes/Andy's - Eth reaper's - eth gladiator's bane/duress/eth stone. The key item beeing the eth reaper for much higher damage than the standard issue up'd kelpie

2. Have the reaper's in my cube and switch it with the up'd kelpie.

3. A different 'slow' setup; Blackhorn's - reaper's - duress/gladiator's/stone etc.

Neither worked satisfactorily.

To sum it up:

No combo of items, excluding kelpie, has enough slow to immobilize baal, ergo kelpie is needed against baal.
Kelpie does not do enough damage to handle CI/FI lister fast enough.

I need help!!

My merc is a HF merc using eth Reaper's socketed with a Shael, eth Duress sacred armour and Andy's Face socketed with an IAS/fire resist jewel.

My sorc stuns and knocks-back Lister using TK, while my merc Jabs him to death. It doesn't take very long at all, even at /p8. Even with a regular Reaper's (which I was using before I found the eth), it still didn't take that much longer.

As for Baal, I personally don't use Kelpie on him. I sic my merc at him while I stand back and spam Blizzards and IceBlasts/FBalls. Decrepify triggers often enough to keep Baal on the spot most of the time.

Even if the merc dies, which happens if I get careless, and Baal starts going for walkies, it's still to your advantage, as a moving target generally gets struck by more Blizzard shards.

Just make sure you stand out of his Hoarfrost range, name-lock him, and spam your Blizzard + fast cast spell at him.

As jjscud has said the real levelling starts around 96 - 97, you have to remember that at clvl 98 you are not yet half way in terms of the total time it'll take to get to 99.

It's always better to kill the minions at /p8, at 98 they add almost half of your already pitiful exp gain per run.

As for why Baal's exp peaks, I don't know either, it was just something I found by accident one day, and from the response of the other runners at the time it wasn't widely known (may be wrong about that though)

On a CI Lister - if you are pure cold, and seriously trying to get to 99, then parking him is the only option. Remember that you have to do 6 - 7 thousand runs, levelling at 97 and 98 is about speed and getting your average run time down to respectable levels.

This comes from experience, you may try to kill a CI, /p8 lister in the beginnig, but once you get a thousand runs into some serious Baal running, I'll gaurantee you'll park him.:wink3:

If I remember correctly, it takes 165 pindle runs on p8 to level from 89 to 90.
I think it might be a good idea to start baaling on lvl 92, because pindle starts to give little xp. from lvl 92.

Sorry, I got that wrong. In my opinion I would kill baal everytime because of the drops. Other than that probably 94 is ideal, because minions start giving less experience from 94.

I think your slow and my slow just aren't quite the same thing.

Might as well update while I'm here. I think this is correct, though it could be a little higher. The experience gain is so painfully slow that I only check her experience every few days.

Looking forward for this big quest for 99 =)

Marvel is really tempting me to go for 99 with my 95 Wind Druid. We shall see.

I added my clvl 91 Blizballer, Coldtest. She's a blast. She's about 32 million xp and 30 minutes from clvl 92, and then probably 4 hours or so to 93.

I'm running only minions right now. 1-2 on /p3, 3-5 on /p8. It's about 3.44 million/run (wouldn't you 98 guys love to have that!). Finds have been Death's Fathom (26%), Steelrends (52/17) and 17/17 Marrowwalks.

I'm close to retiring my hammerdin. Life has been too dangerous for him, and I've been killed too many times recently, and always I've killed teleporting through gloams. The bliz is just a much, much safer bet. I may bring him back if I can snag myself a decent teleport ammy.

Cool crazy runner guy. You level up so fast omg I just hit level 90 yesterday and I started a week before you started coldtest! I'm just a little confused, isn't your baal map such that you don't find many monsters? Wouldn't a paladin be generally more tough against gloams, too? Wouldn't any teleport amulet work once you reach the throne room?

Yup. I just tele right there. Takes 10 seconds, at least with my sorc. My Hammerdin's map isn't as good.

It would because of more HP (and generally better res options), but the sorc can instantly kill gloams with bliz/fball.

Here's the problem. When I switch to the Staff, I lose a whole lot of res (102%, to be exact). That's why he's so easy to kill on switch. Even my 2.5k HP goes away quick. So that's why I want a teleport ammy.

However, I want to still wear the v1.07 ark valor (which is socketed /w a 20% LR/-15% req jewel). I would also like to lose the T-god's for an arachnid's, since I realized I don't need the absorb, but then I need to be able to get the STR for the arkaine's. That's where the ammy comes in. I've got a lot of STR right now, but I need a lot on the ammy to keep it there.

With a teleport ammy with decent STR, pally skills and FCR, I could also put my CtA on switch and push my life even higher, probably around 4k. With max res, I would much more durable.

The real problem is that now that I have switched the gear for this character around so many damn times and completly f'd up his stat points, I want to rebuild him. But I'd rather run with my blizzballer, as she's more fun. If I get some more suitable reasonable equipment, I'll rebuild, but until then, it's not going to happen. I simply don't have the time.

Heh well I have good map (10 seconds to reach throne), Enigma, Grief, Beast, and rest is usual ww'er setup.

Merc is using Hone, Treachery (might change this, but fade does the job done) Vamp gaze. Amp helps alot againt nasty 5th and baal goes down very fast with amp too.
Downside with this char is bad maps with KO's in throne room, and mana burn listers.

Just last night's runs. I am really looking to speed these up with some cold skillers, but LK just won't give them up. XP is around 3 million/run, so I'm about 45 runs out of 93, or about 3 hours. I'll get up there tonight.

Elentari is now in Act 5 Normal. She will be untwinked and at /p8 for all of Normal and NM. No deaths, and only one NDE at clvl 3. I noobily got her surrounded by a horde of Fallen in the Den of Evil, and only survived after quaffing all her minor health pots and then killing a Fallen, so that the rest ran away! Bishibosh dropped for her Pelta Lunata. Nice.

Andariel slain at clvl 20 to a slvl 9 FireBall.

Mephisto slain at clvl 30 to a slvl 19 FireBall.
Diablo slain at clvl 33 to a slvl 20 FireBall, slvl 4 Blizzard (1st merc death).

Some fortunate rune drops, enabling her to make Ancient's Pledge and Stealth, giving resists of 48/73/75/75 and 10 fpc.

3.3 Billion

Quite a milestone. Also had my first gambling spree, which is quite interesting. Before working CtA into my build, this char was a cost center, slowly draining away her funds and having to be replenished by the bank of ATMA (which realistically she helped fill during her pindle running days). Now, She is profitable due mainly to decreased Merc deaths.

I've also noticed since adding CtA that my damage to health ratio is lower, i.e. my average physical damage is about 1/3 of my health. This becomes significant when I've been IM'ed, I simply can't insta-kill myself when IMed. This alone has probably saved 2-3 deaths. Also most stygan dolls can't insta-kill me. End result, 0 deaths since adding CtA.

I can't emphasize enough how good CtA is. My sorc has 1300 life without BO and 2300 with it, and I've saved myself many times because of the BO, mostly from dolls and insane succubi/gloam/vampire throne setups. It's worth the weapon switch.

This may not be the most appropriate place to ask this question, but I'll ask it anyway since the discussion has gone on a tangent to Cta. I think I'm going to go ahead and use the Ohm I found a couple weeks ago from Hell Andy for a CtA.

Anyway, the question: On average how much +skills do you need to make CtA truely effective? For my Tal's sorc, I know its pointless (as its all +sorc skills), but my for blizz sorc - is there a standard suggestion for + skills for CtA. (and I don't want to hear as many as you can get).

It would be cool to only need one BO for a run, but even for a 3.5 minute run that would take a level 19 BO, not very likely. So, shooting for two BOs per run put you in the 115 - 135 (seconds) range. I would say 125 - 135 is preferable because it leave you with flexibility when recasting BO.

Basically that puts you at a lvl 10 BO. Remember that Battle Command will give you 1 +skill if you cast it first and that when in weapon switch you can have +skills from a shield (vanilla - +1, RWM - +2).

Personally, I have a lvl 11 BO (+6 CtA, +2 Shako, +2 Maras, +1 Battle Command) and I get down, clear out the throne room and take on the first wave of minions in the first BO, recast after the first wave and then finish the run on the second BO. I just realized that I still have my old stormshield on switch with CtA and should switch that out for a +skills shield.

I'm not sure what level my BO is, but I get 200 seconds from it. It runs out generally when after I adjust the players settings and step into through the portal to fight baal (right now, I don't recast it, b/c I don't kill baal). I do however, recast BC after Ventar's pack, b/c I need the +1 skill for CM and bliz damage. Makes Lister's pack go much faster.

Elentari took all of 10 seconds and 1 super mana potion to static Normal /p8 Baal to death, with a little help from her merc's pokey stick. She didn't even bother using any of her other spells. It's a joke. NM difficulty at /p8 will be a walk in the park.

Elentari made it to NM Act 4. Still on /p8, untwinked, no +skills, and with no deaths. She recruited her old friend, Azrael the HF merc, from Greiz in NM. 5 merc deaths so far in NM due to his crappy gear, but I was fortunate to shop a Cruel Spetum of the Locust from Asheara, with the resultant extended life-expectancy of Azrael.

Andariel was Blizzard'ed and FBall'ed to death at clvl 52, with tanking from Emilio the Prayer merc.
Duriel was challenged at clvl 57 and proved to be a worthy opponent, taking down Azrael twice. His 50% FR and 75% CR meant that Elentari's spells were drastically reduced in power. A trip back to town was required to buy more mana pots and resurrect Azrael.
Mephisto, after taking down Azrael, was cheesily killed at clvl 63 using Blizzard and the moat trick.

Elentari has completed NM difficulty. Acts 4-5 were a good challenge at /p8 and untwinked. No deaths for her, but Azrael had to be resurrected at least half a dozen times.

NM Diablo slain at clvl 67 using Static, Blizzard, and hit and run tactics.
NM Ancients spawned Cursed, LE, and Holy Fire... divide and conquer, easy.
NM Baal slain at clvl 74 using Static, Blizzard, and hit and run tactics.

Hell awaits. Elentari will quest it twinked with her end-game gear and at /p8, as will Azrael her HF merc.

95 by Pindle isn't all that difficult, 96 takes a while, 97 takes forever.

I know that you get ~2700 exp at /p8 from each pindle run. 291 million exp from 98 - 99, that's 107K pindle runs from 98 - 99.... Assuming half that from 97 - 98 (it'd be slightly less, but not much ) that's 150K odd from 97 - 99...... Keep going backwards for a few levels and you get to 200K pretty quick:shocked:

For items that works, as baals minions drop like champions. For exp it is quite different. Using the numbers above and considering at clvl 98, one (1), /p8 baal run will nett you 80,000 exp, that equates to just over 29 pindle runs.

At 20 seconds per pindle run that means 9.8 minutes to get the same exp as one baal run (my hammerdin can do a baal run in 3 minutes)

Times that by 3500 runs from 98 - 99 and you get a rather more significant difference in total time than 50 hours:hanky: and that's only from 98 - 99:wink2:

EDIT: This is why there are so few 99ers - it's just a massive task no matter how you look at it. It would take most people months to get through 400 + hours of baal running.... and that is why DC's effort was so amazing, not just that it was in HC, but that he got from 98 - 99 in a month!!!!

A month doesn't say all that much, you can assume 400-500 hours total.

Perhaps i'll stop at cLvl95-96 & start either a Blizzballer or Fishymancer. Maybe even work my cLvl80 Hammerdin towards 99.

Any of those 3 would have a better chance than my meteorb lol.

Though i have not tried too hard , you will have quite a hard time getting to 99 with a Fishy.

Another build i found to be quite a good baal runner is a pure light amazon.

For me this is the most fun to play and out of the ones i have tried(blizz/hammerdin) have had the easiest time with.

We did the math on IRC once. IIRC, it would take approximately 2.5 times longer to get to 99 off Pindle than Baal... Maybe it was a bit more. Somewhere in the vicinity of 250k runs, was it? Argh, I can't remember!

DC that sounds about right given my qick math above , you'd be sick of pindle well before completing over 200K runs......... In fact most people would be well sick of Baal before completing 5000+ runs......

I'll see about that Baal comp. You and Marvel are tempting me, but I still need a few pieces of gear before I go for a second 99er.

Also think of the runs to recover from a death. Its nasty at about 100 runs for baal running. It looks like about 3000 runs at 98. That's alot of runs to go without dying alone, let alone just to make up for a death.

Ahhh you guys are definately right- one gets bored just thinking about how many P8 Pindle runs he needs to reach cLvl99! 2.5x more runs is making me cringe. Plus, i'm bound to die many a time- I get impatient with leveling, whereas I can mf for days on end without bordem setting in.

Shako, Enigma, 2x trapper claws (have 2x +3 Trap, +3 LS, and -req% Greater Talons [the -req% is different on each], and with 2x +15 res all jewels in each that's a hefty +60 resist all), Arachnid Belt, Bloodfist (or Magefist to hit FCR breakpoints for Teleport), Mara's (or a Crafted assn Ammy if I use Magefist, to hit a FCR breakpoint), 2x SoJ, Waterwalk, 8x Trap Skillers (have some really nice second mods on some of them)... Eth Upg'd Amn'd Kelpie, Rattlecage with +10 res-all jewel, Andy's Visage with Um for the merc.

Something like that.


EDIT: Haven't really started my way to 99 yet, as it is... assuming I do start the quest I'll add her to the table when I'm in the mid-90s. I'm talking about a Single Player Assassin... I'm aware Doc has had one (or two) at 99 on BNet.

I'll try to make more time for gaming. My test runs have proven pretty successful, though Lister with some nasty mods will still be a problem and Baal goes down pretty slow. I'm considering using Goblin Toe (or at least keeping it in the cube) with 1pt dragon talon to make Baal go down fast. The damage is not a problem... even my Fire Blast is over 5k!

1. 12-Frame at 42% (I will have 45-50 depending on the Crafted Amulet I use). Although, I suppose if no nasty elemental monsters spawn, I can teleport with CtA+Lidless (further 20%) on switch at 11 Frames (65% breakpoint).

2. Fade somewhere in the zone of level 10-15.

3. CoS doesn't work on Lister's pack (although it doesn't hurt to use it for the defense boost and -% enemy defense). Don't know yet about Mind Blast, I'll find out when I can take a break from studying (i.e. tomorrow...) -- I hope the stun works. I plan to stair trap using the merc. If they are stationary (held back by the merc) then a stream of lightning will do good if I put all the traps just southeast of the stair bottom, or right behind the merc up on the stairs. Worked in a similar fashion on my Blizzballer, so why not now? It will help to level the merc though.

The stun from MB does work on Lister's pack, it just doesn't convert. From [a href="[URL]http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=408091[/URL]" target="_blank" class="link link--external" rel="nofollow noopener"]Martriarch DarkCloak[/a].

WSK was easy, no gloams until Throne, and then I ran to town a time or 4 to heal. DS and merc took care of them, and the waves were easy. Lister spawned Fanat. The pack wasn't so hard as lister himself. See, lister's pack you can MB all you want and they're not going to convert, so that's what I did. Lister himself didn't like my merc, and those two tussled for a while before I could rain MB's down.

The stair trap should work just fine.

I don't know but all this talk from DC about an Assassin makes me want to start my Venomous Ghost...

I think she'll do well... Fade main aura, with Venom as main skill, using Tiger Strike/Dragon Claw... Massive dmg output (I think, still have to test her out )

Fade gives 20%DR + Dungo's or SoE, that's 35% right away... If I use Nat's set, I think that gives another 20%? So 50%DR plus 1000+% added from Tiger Strike... RAWR... That's sexy

Moved up a couple of spots. All exp gained from the Pindlethon. Suffered a few deaths because of the high MF equipment and concentrating on items. Now on to Baal again

This only takes into cosideration the leveling portion, not the character building part. To me this support the suggestion to rebuild even in the low 90s if you can make a better char and also the suggestion to reach the 90s before bothering with this list.

Of course the total runs (5500) is so great that having a char that you enjoy playing is still one of the most important parts.

Took my Meteorb off the list. Pindle runs are leveling her up, but VERY slowly. I'll run Baal for awhile with my hammerdin, and see where I end up.

Should be hitting 96 with my Assassin tomorrow. I'll add myself to the table either at 96 or 97 I guess.

well added my new necro to the list, I've just lvled him to clvl 96. It took less than two weeks from creating him till 96

Posting my progess.

I would be clvl 95 EXCEPT for my first death with this character. I thus would prep for work and a paper I need to write before I could do those final 8 or so runs.

Here's how it happened: In the throne were succibi, one other monster (I think gloams). So I was killing the succubi and had tele'd on one of them. I was at the western corner of one of the pillars (standing right next to it). I cast a bliz on myself to kill the non-succubi creatures and then WHAM! Dead. A stiygian doll (or a couple, I never saw) had charged at me and died while they were right behind the pillar. I may have been amped at the time. Either way, 2.2k HP gone. I got my body back, only losing 6 or 8 million (a handful of runs, but more than my time allowed).

I hit 95 later. Then I'll have 6k bliz with only 2 skillers.

@usa: 15-20. My BO lasts 200 seconds (ish) and hardly ever needs recasting.

Seeing as I hit 97 tonight I decided to add my Assassin. Slow going seeing as I'm once again playing WoW, and with school and real life D2 is not getting the attention it deserves. Hope to start playing more though to try and hit that 99 sometime.

Can't wait to see grogs' 99 post, and for those wondering Marvel is 98 on his way towards 99.

Hit cLvl91 with my new Hammerdin today. Wasted skills/stats on my other one, so I decided to remake him. I am planning to baal my way to cLvl99 with this character. My sorceress, for the time being, will be on hold- should I remove her from this list or leave her for now? (she will reach cLvl99 after my Hammerdin).

Was racing my brother to cLvl90. I played all day & decided to lay under the aircon for a few mins... fell asleep too. Guess who didn't wake me up? He had this huge grin on his face when I woke up- goes to me "Hmm.. guess what level I am?". I was like "...dude, thats cold. I would have woken you up..possibly haha". He goes to me "I don't rly need Nigma bro. Was gonna let you have the first set either way- u've been full workin hard for that armor". So hazzah to our sexy cLvl90+ Hammderdins & my (soon to be) sexy new Nigma... Just gotta find my 3os 10/10% Archon Plate n that.. where ever I put it. Will post it in the Item Find thread.

Also, a quick querry: does anyone have a link to exp gain from baal runs. Trying to find out what exp you gain from P1, P5 & P8. Thanks.

Nice one Psy. I have to ask, why enigma in such armor. It doesn't give %ED but +ED and huge str bonus, I'd put it in breast plate, plain, no sup (too costly to repair)

Ahhh i'm a perfectionist. Enigma Sup Archon Plate is perfection to me
(even if it does have fairly high Str req & repair costs). It's a shame.. the only one I have is 10/10%- never managed to get 15/15% like I was hoping for.

I also do it for the defence- my armor should come out with about 1.3k def taking my total (+merc) to over 12k+

My pally has about 85str base I think. 125base dex & the rest into life.
He has about 2.6k or so atm & still have another 60stats to put up
(no spirit shield yet either)

There is no point at all at making runs at anything under /p 8 for minions and /p3 for baal if you are trying for 99....

Is that list really accurate? I wanted to test it and did a /p8 minions / /p3 baal run with a level 90 char and the way it turned out I would have to do ~20 runs to reach 91, not 15. How can that be?

Erm, even with the exact number of experience gained I would have to do 22 "p8 minion/p3 baal" runs to reach lvl 91. How's that? Why do I get different numbers? I wrote down the exp exactly before the minions and then after baal. I substracted them from each other and divided the exp needed for level 91 through the exp I gained. That's 21,9, so 22. Why isn't it 15, as the list says? *confused*

I didn't have any numbers to work on for the low 90s so I guessed a bit. The exact numbers may be a bit off but the percentage of the whole still very accurate, which is what I was really after.

That'd be good. But it would be possible to create a definite list with pretty much exactly the number of runs you have to do to level up?

It will also depend on what you kill on the way down.... if you're like jjscud and kill a couple of boss packs (or whatever gets in your way), then you'll get slightly more exp per run... whereas if you skip everything and only clear the throne you'll get slightly less exp.

For example, jjscud is getting ~84K exp per run @ 98, where my hammerdin was getting ~80K. I had to do nearly 3600 runs at level 98 where jjscud will have to 3400 odd.

For these reasons any list that tells you exactly how many runs you have to complete will never be accurate for everyone... The guide that jjscud posted is just that, a guide.

At the end of the day, it's a long way to 99, and worrying about 6 runs at level 90 isn't going to make any difference in the long term

I've just lvled my necro one more hard lvl took about 500 runs/p8 all minions. One death because of my fault: after killing the third pack I've collected some gold and I see a magic jewel so open the charachter screen and drop it in the cube and at that moment Baal spawn the 4 th groub with fana aura :s not only that I've thought heh som rejunv and I could come out so first hit almost died rejunv second hit dead (1.5 k life in one hit). good thing was, I've could recover my corpse WSK 2 and 3 no gloams and wide range CE on p1 is best skill out there. So I've lost almost 2 hours intensive playing because of that death. From now on moving will be more slowly as it'll take more than 1 k to the next lvl= about 2 weeks (6 hours/day)

I guessed that, grogs. But you are right that a handful of runs won't make the difference. Unfortunately I'm rather short on time atm anyway...

XP took a nose dive again after I hit 95. I can't wait to get to 96 and see another big loss, but that is 17 hours of play time away, approximately.

My Xandra reached level 93 today, somewhere around Baal run number 390

I added my lightning sorc Hera. She's halfway to lvl 94 and because I have different priorities now, lvl 95 will be my first reachable aim.

Okay, I changed it, should be correct.

Of course it will be harder the more I level, but I overestimated the way to 95, so I will give 96 at least a chance! :wink3: (if I don't keep dying now that I died once ^^) Good progress on your necro!

Getting close to 96, but maybe the last update of the year. (so this one might go to you grogs :wink3: )

Guess I haven't updated in awhile.

Have hardly played because I got addicted to WoW again but decided to quit last night, and reroll in d2 (softcore 1.10 this time maybe get some MP done or some melee chars) slow going for now but once I get the WoW out of my system it should be a lot faster (unless I start playing DotA again!)

Anyways, the Trapsin is still a long ways from 99 but I'm gonna try to keep doing runs here and there get her finished in a couple of months ^^ but I'm a bit burnt out on that, and I still can't go much under 4 minutes per run so it's quite a lot slower than my first Blizzballer. Anyways, had to update and can't wait to see Marvel finally get his first 99

Congrats Marvel now get going on another one ^^

Just a smallish update for Mave-II. Still on holidays till the 7th so I'll update her at least once more during these last few days, then it'll slow down some. Hope to finish in about a month though. Will update again after I hit 3.375, which is the halfway mark between 98 and 99.

Since my MF sorc collected a lot of exp last weeks and some items which made p8 baal runs possible (bliz ormus) I decided to add her in this list. lvl 96

lastly lvled to 98 I was at the beginning happy (lvled after killing the 4th wave) but as I noticed how much exp came from killing lister wave :shocked: only 6k, This is realy an evil lvl. For now I need some pause from baal after that will try to get forward slowly

Blizzard/corpse explosion, how do you deal with CI then, just wait for your merc to get the first kill, and than spam CE? doesn't that take up way too much time? oh well, guess it doesn't matter for me, as I'm not likely to attempt 99 (actually I've never reached 80...)

I see Blizzballers do well. Why Meteorbs don't cut it?

Listers and Ventars pack have very high fire resistance, and a lower than 1k FO takes a while to knock them out on P8. That's from my experience anyway.

The cold attacks are the main attacks for the sorcs, and Frozen Orb is simply not as powerful as the ridiculous Blizzard. Fire is just a backup - a way to deal with cold immunes in the throne and to kill the second minion wave.

Hi, I think about rebuilding my lightning zon and focus her on killing power (rather than MF). But I would like to get some serious specific gear first which would probably mean a lot of LK runs (for gems, skillers etc.).
The question - I am almost lvl 97 with Viraya, is it even worth it to start from scratch? How much work is left for fresh lvl 97 character to gain lvl 99? If it is not more than 3/4, I would probably not start the new character (and maybe not start the serious lvl 99 project at all and focus on my Tunnels project instead)

1 point in DAE, all prereqs, 3 points in Pierce, 13 in Valk, rest in lightning skills.
LF is 41 (with Thundergods), CS is 38.
My valk is currently 20 (she could be 17) and also I think about using Razortail permanently (so I could spare 1 or 2 points in pierce).
And I also think about using a "power" shield, but I have no str for 156 requiring Monarch. (I have enough for War Travs, not more.)
I have not the perfect facets right now but they falls sometimes (more often than HRs :wink3 ...

That's almost identical to Shieldmaiden's except I've got 5 skills placed in the bow tree (unfortunately turned out to be useless)

Anyways, my own opinion is, a decent Lf zon kills any non LI's very quickly. I remember you posting your run times in the 4-4.5 minute range. I think that will be tough to beat without using teleport. The only question is survivability. Again, ShieldMaiden has more strength so a bit less life. The strength is wasted since I ended up going with a lighter stuff. Once CtA is added (a must in my opinion) you'll have quite a healthy chunk of life and good survivability.

So, I wouldn't rebuild, but that's me. You should try and get ahold of silospen, BigBoobsBigBow is a similar build to ours and ThePerfectJava is a much more power optimized build. He's pushed both quite a bit and would have a much better feel for the difference.

Hrus: Do you have any backup skill for the LI? I am planning on making a LF Zon for WSK and CS, I thought about Nightfish's LF/FA guide.

Try doing P8 Baalruns with your 'sin.

You can do Pits until level 96-97 just fine, but if you can't do those 4k+ Baalruns on p8 in a decent manner it doesn't matter.

Mjöllnir has joined the quest for lvl 99. Hundreds of Pit runs followed by thousands of Baal runs, beware!

Well, actually you can allways put points in lightning synergies, and you can't get 100% pierce without Razortail anyway. If the T-Gods adds +3 CS, I wouldn't think about Razortail. Otherwise... I could allways switch just for the minion waves, but my java can't wear War Travs without the T-Gods Strength bonus.

I am using PDiamonded upped Mosers's and I am not a fan of max block. With DAE, I am happy with 60% block.

Doubt I'll ever make it very far up this list, since I eventually get bored with characters, but I just reached 2.00 billion exp. for the second time. I'm hoping the blizzsorc will eventually complete my grail-1, but with 4 items to go (5 with Tyrael's) I could be a while.

Also, I'm not even looking at Baal or 95+ yet... and I'm doubtful I will.

Though I must use Wartravs because of Thunderstroke

I do the exact thing with just 1 hard point in pierce. It gives 98% pierce with +7 to all skills/passives and Razortail against the waves.

@KV: The basic Tstroke/LR switch is sufficient, and the more serious you are about running WSK, the stronger is pure javazon than any hybrid build. There are only few unbreakable immunes, which can be easily jabbed, esp. since the 90's.

If there are no Souls present, use Titan's (replenish). Swap to Tstroke (inventory/cube, so called "hard switch&quot upon encounter and LR/CS them. Swap to Razortail/Titan's prior to waves, and back to Tstroke against Baal. A bit complicated together with all those /players, but at least you don't fall asleep while Baal-running

3.500. This week should be the final push.

6 99'er stuff happened since last time I checked the thread, good luck to all with a bit left to go and keep it going DC. Hardcore 99'ers are big achievments

Adding my hammerdin to the list. Since I reached 95, my merc has seen much better survivability, and I'm more confident. Previously I was running minions at /p8, except for Listers pack @ /p5. Since reaching 95, I've done all waves at /p8, and the experience gain is huge. I caluculated just over 200 runes to 96, and I'm almost 1/4 there now.

6 99'er stuff happened since last time I checked the thread, good luck to all with a bit left to go and keep it going DC. Hardcore 99'ers are big achievments

If you consider strijdje's 2x 99ers (which were not added to this table but done before tweety's 99er even) that makes 8 single player 1.10+ 99ers, almost 9.

Viraya is lvl 97 now. I don't run Baal for lvl 99 now, just for a GC! After completing my other long time projects I will consider rebuilding her and try to get her really going.

I don't think I've done anywhere near 725 tunnel runs in my sorcs breif life and yet she levelled up from levels 71-84 almost exclusively there.

Yes, diminishing exp exists and it is a serious hinderance at high levels. Also, by level 94, you are more than 5 levels above the bosses in tunnels and you take additional exp penalties for that.

This is about 20-21k exp each run averagely. Considering that the exp bar goes one pixel to the right each ~2M exp. This doesn't look like very fast exping :laugh:

I should probably take my SC Meteorb to 99, but bored w/ SC, and moved onto HC now...

Highest HC char is my CL/FO Sorc (Lvl 60)... She wouldn't be a good Baal runner though, so I doubt she's 99 material... Maybe my LF/FA zon though Only Lvl 23 right now though, so I got a while...

LF/FA tends to have her lightning skills too weak for Baal running. Lightning is a great element for running Baal anyways seeing as there are few LIs. The FA is not Baal running material either. Pure lightning works just fine.

Try to reach 97 with a character, then you might have "an idea" of what 99 is about :badteeth:

On topic; Savant is discarded as a 99 project due to the lack of ability in solo-running (Low-hp, I don't fancy Bonehew) - I had no idea being 2 players would cut that much into the exp-gain (At level 97 I'm looking at a 50% increase in runs for next level, wouldn't like to know what it's like at 98 -> 99.)
Although I have the means to get the hammerdin going I do not fancy playing him that much.
So for the time being, those two carcs are just taking up space while looking fancy :badteeth:
Sometime in the future I plan on making a Lightning sorc comparable to that of Reborn. I'm currently occupied by rune-hunting and I only miss the other half of Infinity to get her going.

Should see in a couple of weeks... I'm leaning towards a hammerdin at the moment (was hoping to get a Jah for his own Enigma but I'm too impatient and I don't think I'll be getting one anytime soon, so he'll have to borrow the Assassin's) because it's the easy way to do it.

Was discussing with grogs whether to go for the 75 or the 125 FCR and I think I'm gonna try to make it work... but it's gonna be tough without RWM and h4x0r Spirit. Guess I'll have to ditch a SoJ for a FCR ring and use a 20% FCR circlet instead of Shako.

Grogs will be some weeks ahead of me though so I don't know how much of a race I'll be.

Was hoping to be at 98 by the end of this weekend, which would have been 1000 runs in a week (I'm on holiday from work). But alas didn't quite get there. Still nice progress, and will be starting the long level at some stage this week.

In an effort to get a definitive list of the 99 chars in SP, I've added Strooj's 2 99ers.

I had more or less abandoned the pure blizzer but I decided that I'd take her out for a spin, turns out I still like her, alot.
Now she's got most of her equipment from marge (the blizz/light sorc), and marge is packing max MF for tunnels and fcr for LK.

1 level to go.

I figure since it's a retardedly overpowered and well-geared hammerdin I can get 99 by the time Marvel finishes his rune hunting, then maybe switch to RWM and race him with the next char. 96 in is pretty fast considering I started the hammerdin 3 or 4 days ago. I wanna hit 97 sometime in the next couple of days but I might not have the time to devote to it... by the weekend for sure though. I'll add him to the table soon, I suppose.

Another week and 40 million exp to add to Jenna. It should have been higher, but I had a small issue with a friends kid who somehow managed to delete my D2 characters (yes, in every version I play).. luckily Tim had pointed out it would be a good idea to back up my chars and stashes not 5 days earlier.

The short of it was that I lost approx 30 million exp, (and yes the child in question did get yelled at).

Last millions went very fast. I don't know yet if I will go on, maybe i should do something with my other chars now.
I still have two chars i want to finish:

-Ethan, my ethereal only untwinked softcore zealot

I looked very closely because of which monster I lvled, it was a minion of the 4th wave. And he (or one of his brothers) dropped me a jewel with -15req +26 poisonresist, I might use it for the stormshield of my windy. It might also be usefull for an ES sorc.
In that run baal dropped me an +3 eth eschutas, that's +1 for my eth graillist.

1-80 complete... the easy part is over with, now for a whole slue of Tunnel runs.

This lady and my MF sorc are sharing armour at the moment so no hurries yet as I've still got quite a bit of gear to find before I can make a reasonable go at 90+. This is the only 'worthy' thing I could think of to use my perfect DF though.

Update: Since I restarted, I couldn't resist remaking the blizz sorc I had, right down to the name and stat allocation. So, without further ado, I re-introduce you to Icewind, newest member of the clvl95 group.

I've been playing Diablo II for about six weeks now, my level 89 Necro is my first ever character. Quite chuffed to have beaten the game at the first attempt!

Weeh I died one again, I cannot remember I died once at lvl 96 and just before hitting 3B, I died at 97. I tried to make it to 3B anyway today, but gonna sleep now...

Been leveling Molly a bit more this week.

Bunch of tunnels runs this weekend...

Level 90 now. Slow going as not enough time or energy. I'm combining MFing and Leveling, which is probably why I'm not doing so great in either respect!
That said, I am starting to get some drops now, had Blackhorns, Harlequin Crest and Peasant Crown all drop on me within a 24 hour period.

Hammerdin hit 98 last night but I'm not going to add him to the table, seeing as I can't take him to 99. So I'll just stop right here at 98 and try for a different character, hopefully I can get started with a Tesladin

I have no idea how you managed to go through the boredom of taking a hammerdin to 99. Both you and grogs. Seriously, it's so powerful that it feels like a waste of my time to play. And his gear and build are pretty cool too, bit different than your standard hammerdin.

My son was playing a Necro in NM today, he was farming Andy. In five runs, he snagged six uniques and 4 set items. Included was a unique Vigermagi armour jobbie, which made me more than a little green! Hey ho. :starry:

He never posted a 99 thread. He was already addicted to WoW when he hit 99, so he didn't really care.

Lycan hit 99 around June 2005, by the way. Since we should probably give credit where credit is due, strijdje had 2 99ers in 1.10 before tweety got his first.

I finally add a character to the few, the proud, the insane.

My IK Barb hits 90 and Horus is on his way to 99. As a barb I'm pretty sure I'm looking at a looooooonnnng journey to 99, but I'm bound and determined to get at least one character to 99. IK Barb seems much more viable atm than the Necro, although my Necro might end up being a lot more powerful in the end (but much more expensive with tons of runes and items still needed to make his run to 99).

Does it count in this thread if you level to 99 in 1.09? Or only 1.10+?

Reason is I am going to pick up where I left off for my 1.09 assassin, running hell cows. Not sure if she could (or should) try in 1.10 or not.

You can always make a note by her name of the version she's using... iirc 1.10 is super hard to get to 99, don't know about 1.09 but people here will definitely know

It has been asked before in this thread if chars from earlier versions can be added to the table.

The general feeling is that characters in this thread be limited to those that are 1.1x, for the simple reason that it is much, much harder for a character to get to 99 in 1.1x than 1.09.

Haven't updated in a little while, but my hammerdin is making progress. 1/2 way to 97...

Big weekend pushes me about 1/3 of the way to 92. Ran Pindle all weekend looking for more IK armors. Need to find a few extras to test some run ideas I have for levels 95+.

First update in a while. Needed to catch up a bit...

Mostly tunnels, with a few stints of Pindle mixed in.

Crossed the 2 billion mark with Horus. Tons of Pindle runs over the past week. It's a long way till the next major marker at 2.5 billion.

I thought it was about time I added my barbarian to the mix, currently clvl94, and doing Baal runs. I find that these runs (although frustrating at times) are more fun, and desinitely more diverse than running with my Hammerdin. We'll see how far I can take him...

edit: oops, now I'm back to 3.028

is was a nasty combination of an ok group, with conviction aura, an extra fast might CE double swing group and lots of shooting birds. Probaply I was cursed by Baal or by the ok or by those birds. I hadn't seen the two groups yet and teleported right into the swinging group. It wasn't difficult for them to slice away my life, while my def was down by conviction and my life was allready half down by those birds and I may have been cursed and they had might!
Luckily getting back my body was not so difficult since it was at p1.

Ok I really don't understand how this could happen. I died zero times from 96-97 and now this happened:

Lister was CE and fanat aura, so, like I allways do when he is Cold immune, I park him outside baal's sight. While doing this, 10 ghouls were waiting there. I was a little bit shocked seeing them there and while the fanat aura triggered them to shoot at me as hard as they could, I died again. I'm very disappointed in myself that I just standed there and died instead of teleporting away or something.
I died a few more times getting my body back and after I finally got it back collected all the dead bodies with exp. I'm down to 3.008 exp now and will take a break in lvling her up to 98, cause I'm a bit pissed of now.

edit:

I took a beer and I can allready see the good points from it again:
1. I found a plain pala combat skiller while getting my body back ;-)
2. Now I will find more items with this sorc before reaching lvl 99, because of the extra 150 baal runs I have to do.
3. I learned that also parking Lister can be dangerous
4. I learned that when you die from ghouls, getting your body back with -30ish resists must be done very very slowly or maybe even consider not getting it back.
5. Luckily this happened at lvl 97 and not at lvl 98 (yet...).

Added Nikola to the table. 98. Trying to continue making progress, but I'm a bit burnt out on d2 so it may be a bit slower.

Also added Entropy, my hammerdin, to the table, but he's parked at 98. I may make some progress with him as well when I feel like playing a blender but for the time being he's gonna be at 3.229 for awhile.

I'm joining the quest with my hc lf/fa zon asdf_Joan, soon level 92. Doing p1 baal/wsk runs atm and so far it's giving me quite good xp.

Somehow, my cd-rom drive decided to work. And thus I got an hour or so of D2 in. First time playing in something like 6 months.
