Hi everyone,

While I haven't played much recently, I expect to have some more time for D2 as we approach the end of the year.

In recent years we often had "small" tournaments in between the bigger and more time-consuming events such as MFO and RFL, and I was wondering if people were interested in something like that. As specialist MF and RF characters are regularly used in MFO and RFL respectively, several tournaments to fill the gap focused on a combination thereof.

A few years ago I hosted this combined MF/RF tournament and last year this tournament along the same lines. I would gladly do so again if there is any interest. The gist of it was this:
  • 2-3 weeks duration
  • 20h sets of running, with only one set counting towards the score
  • both S&Us and rune finds are scored
  • either run any area as desired, or something like same targets as MFO plus extra rune finding areas
There was also @Luhkoh's off the beaten path tourney, which was basically the same but with the added twist that the most of the very popular areas weren't allowed, forcing players to turn their attention to less run areas.

Any interest in such an MF/RF tournament, and if so, any timeframe that does or doesn't work well for you guys? I should be able to host something any time from next week until just before Christmas.

Cheers!

I would be interested in a tournament with the format you mentioned. Its really flexiable for casual players like myself and I really enjoyed it the last time.
In regards of the time frame i dont really care. I just hope i can get my torch before it starts so that i can focus on running cs ^^

Last year's Finding the Balance tournament was one of the most fun I played to be honest - maybe that was about my own choice to team my characters, and when one had an upgrade, it unlocked next team member, etc...with areas being alternatively MF or RF classical ones.

If something similar comes along I may participate, even if my year's goal are hard to handle (especially this SP Random Tournament entry), your tournament was on my TODO list!

I participated in the OBP tournament, and that was amazing fun. I would definitely join for that one. I have even considered hosting it if noone else did (or rather, host it once I have that time on my hands), so I would definitely join if that was the tournament chosen.

What I like about the OBP tournament specifically is that it pushes everyone to go to seldom seen areas, rather than it being a usual rotation of pit/AT/ask.

10/10 initiative @ffs. Look forward to see what sort of tournament this becomes.

I will enjoy prompt to get 20 hours over three weeks with my Windy at Nihl, so any format that gives Nihl runners a leg up works for me :) more seriously, this will be great motivation for me and I’m definitely in. Although I’m gone a solid chunk of early December, I’ll definitely make good progress to 20 hours over any three week stretch.

I’m up for anything, if it fits with something I can do with my UT99er, even better.

As long as CS is an allowed target then I’m down but not sure how much I’ll be able to play.

Very nice.

In the last MF/RF tournament there was some discussion about targets and related scoring tables, and in particular why restrict it at all and/or have different scorings for the various targets. The Baal category wasn't very popular for this anyway, and while drop ratios for targets such as Baal or Nihl are of course different (hence the different scoring tables), a proposal was to simply use the lvl 85 area scores such as in MFO, irrespective of the area actually run. Same for runes even though drop ratios don't matter at all for LK for example.

The idea being that it's up to the player to choose how to approach this, all being subject to the same scoring system and aware of the respective pros and cons. I kinda like that approach as it's a big simplification and it avoids isolated categories with only a small number of runners. And the fact that the scoring table doesn't reflect actual drop odds is not a downside at all in my book given the above, differences are small either way, and people who do choose a certain "unusual" target have usually other reasons to do so rather then prioritizing efficient magic/rune finding.

So unless others feel strongly/differently about this, I'd say let's go for that, basically:
  • 20h sets
  • Top 5 S&Us and runes are scored
  • S&Us scored as per MFO alvl 85 tables
  • Runes scored as per RFL system
  • Overall placement score determined same way as in the last MF/RF combo tournaments (see links above)
  • all areas allowed
  • drops from all targets count (including poppables like LK chests, special monsters such as seal bosses etc.)
As for the dates, I'd shoot for 4-26 December if that works for everyone? Some may lack time during the holidays, others may not be able to start earlier. So I'm thinking a 3 week window should allow most people to get in at least one 20h set overall.

I like both the simplification of the scoring systems and the choice to run anywhere in the game. I'm in & looking forward to the competition!

All versions 1.07+ including D2R. I'll create a sign-up thread later this week.
How would you even start to accommodate 1.07-1.09 in terms of uniques and runes? Everything is so different rarity wise. (Although I provided 1.08-1.09 scores for last RFL, it still doesn't help with chests) Also tons of potential for instant wins because of some items being tens of times as rare in the past as a Tyrael's nowadays.

@art_vandelay as explained above, only one scoring system irrespective of rarity. If someone runs 1.07 for some personal reasons, a Zod is 71.8 just like 1.13/1.14 even though it is of course much rarer in 1.07. Same logic as with running targets that compare unfavourably for S&U drops such as Baal.

However this will not impact the mandatory bragging for such a drop, especially against (or towards) the winner (who could be the host) of this tournament.

Sadly I have not enough time to produce a 1.07 character and complain myself :p
