Way to go Skipjack! I hope to follow you to NM soon, but there are a couple of roadblocks that I will have to get by first (Ancients and Baal).

I had one excellent find in Act 5:

Of course, it would be better for an Amazon, but Spirit_Bull the Barbarian enjoys the resistances and the self repair of this ethereal circlet. I use the Larzuk socket to get an extra ten strength.

The personalization item had to be a weapon and this is it. The extra ten points of strength were needed to wield it:

The combat skill point, the 6% life steal, and the elemental damage make this useful, though certainly not overpowering. It sure beats the rare ethereal large axe that he was using.

Spirit_Bull finished off Nilathak and is ready to head for the ancients with his new sword. It will be interesting to see if his killing ability is significantly better. It should be.

He is level 44, his strength is 62, his life is 701 and he has found 36 way points. That adds up to 491 points.

Regarding the zon discussion, I am actually doing the passive first route with Wraithell. No 'of the Wraith' items yet, but she has an nice eth short spear of replenishing, and an eth Brandistock of self-repair for now. I will do a full update once I finish act 3.

Question 1:
If I find a rare that has the spirit, angel, wraith, or ghost in the name, it is usable, correct? Not just Ghost Armor or a druid's Earth Spirit, I mean, say your circlet you found called Raven Horn Circlet, was instead called Raven Spirit Circlet, and it was not ethereal, it would be usable?

Question 2:
We can use the respecialize, right? I have no intention of changing my stats, especially strength. I'll make a note of stats, and keep them the same, but can we respec the skills?

I am also playing a passives amazon, and will probably keep it that way throughout, but I could see wanting to fine tune some skill points down the road.

(1) Yes, rares with the correct word in them can be used. However, the exact letters GHOST, SPIRIT, ANGEL, WRAITH must start a word in the item name.

(2) No, you cannot redo your skills in midgame. The whole idea is that you must stick to a single tree throughout normal and then to two trees in NM. If you could correct all of the horrible decisions that you have to make because of that, it would defeat the intended penalty of the rules. If you want to have that kind of freedom, you could simply not assign a bunch of skill points until you reach NM or HELL and then assign the points the way you want at that time. I have saved about ten points from normal difficulty for that purpose.

Spirit_Bull has defeated Baal and moved on to NM. He did have to leave P8 and move to P1 for the hard minions (Lister) and Baal. But survival beats pride any day.

Angelique has defeated Mephisto and reached the Pandemonium Fortress. There were a few tense moments in Act 3, since once again I failed to add to my collection of ethereal items. Static has enough range and Teleport gives me enough mobility to stay out of the way of monsters most of the time, but any lapse in concentration means my life pool drops precipitously. There are no particular items of note, unfortunately, except for a useful 20% Nagelring I found. Total MF is up to 57% for my kills (aka none, since all I have is Static), and 122% for merc kills, since he is still using a 3-flawed BP and 2-flawed helm. I've now got 26 free skill points saved up, waiting for NM. I'll be able to max FO the instant I step into NM, assuming I live that long. :)

Act IV was quite a pain with all the swarming maggots. Other than that, nothing special. Leveled three times and got a little more strength. Diablo took his time bleeding to death and dropped four rare items. No equipment updates. I'm waiting forward for the fifth act because an Amn rune is likely to drop during the last act which is the last ingredient for a 'Strength' claw.

I took the rest of act III at /p1, trying to maximize the number of levels I got in act IV. It worked. I finished act III at level 27, raised it to /p8, and gained 5 levels, finishing act IV at level 32.

Even big D was on /p8, and he took forever. She mostly used WoI, since it lasted much longer, and she usually couldn't get off more than one trap in between lightning hoses. She only had 1 point in it, so even though it was synergized heavily, it wasn't as good as WoF. Big D dropped a non-eth Stoutnail, which wouldn't have been an improvement even if it had been ethereal.

The only other point of note is that she finally has boots on, although they're thouroghly unspectacular.

score = 31 * 2 wp + 333 * 1 hp - 69 * 1 str - 32 * 5 level = 166

This is definitely the most unusual scoring system I've ever seen. I'm not complaining, though, I have deliberately avoided worrying about the score so far, and I just got done with an act where I tried as hard as possible to level as many times as possible, so that I could dump lots of points into strength. That's exactly what the scoring system is designed to discourage, so the drop in points isn't entirely unexpected. And on top of it, Act IV only has 3 waypoints...

Angelique the Sorceress has made it to the frosty environs of Harrogath. She's currently cooling her heels in the Frigid Highlands, having put the smack down on Diablo (Shenk, too, but he's hardly worth mentioning). The latter stages of Act 4 were fairly rough going, since the fire-breathing demons (forgot their name) do a significant amount of damage to a poor Sorceress with no resists to speak of and only 2 slots in her belt. Town trips were frequent occurrences. The merc's survivability also took a significant nosedive in the Chaos Sanctuary, although he hasn't died yet in Act 5, so we'll see how much longer he can keep his MF equipment on. Diablo went down fairly easily, all things considered, as I just ran in circles around him casting Static and rezzing my merc every time Diablo lightning'd him. He dropped 5 rare items, but not a one was ethereal or otherwise eligible for wearing. As a result, Angelique is still wandering around in only a sash, an ethereal orb, and an ethereal plate mail (she had to sacrifice her MF ammy to pump up enough strength to wear that).

My personalization target for Act 5 is still undecided, although I'm currently tossing around several ideas in my head. One option could be a Rhyme shield, although without an investment in Dex, the shield's defensive helpfulness may be rather limited. I could also make a Lore helm, which would help with skills and lightning resists. I could try gambling for circlets, gloves, or boots as well. Hopefully something delicious will drop and make all this speculation moot anyhow. :)

Spirit_Bull has just arrived at the Outer Cloister. He is on a mission to find a KO rune. He needs it to make a "Harmony" bow for his mercenary. She has been such an amazing help to him that he will do anything to make her happy. Besides, that bow will make him happy too as she mows down the opposition.

Unfortunately, the countess did not drop a KO. Here are the results of the six runs that it took for her to find the five runes that were ORT or better. IO, SOL, AMN, THUL, ORT, RAL, TAL(2), ITH, ETH, TIR, EL.

Spirit_Bull found another sword. This one is not quite as powerful, but it has +6 mana stolen per hit. SB also put a couple points in Double Swing so he now uses two swords. He keeps 16 health potions in his wore out Sharkskin belt and just keeps smacking the opposition and scarfing potions. The merc seems to like the fact that he can be her tank. She has a good bow, and as noted above, she dreams about an even better one.

He will be wearing the Glorious Full Plate Mail of Restoration and with 364 defense and self repair, he will not have to worry about armor until he considers whether or not to personalize one in Act 5.

The merc will wear the Stealth linked mail of course because it will not wear out while she is wearing it. Spirit_Bull would like to use it, but he knows that it would be gone in about a half hour of adventuring time.

Before these two dropped, there were several other ethereal breast plates and chain mails that dropped. I was convinced that I could just keep wearing one and saving one as long as they kept dropping like that. (The old Angelic Mantle is still being saved, but only in case enough of the other set items are found to make it worthwhile.)

However, there is still a problem. He has not yet found a belt or a pair of gloves with self repair (or the right word). The sharkskin gloves are being kept so that he has four levels in his belt for potions. The soul finger gauntlets are being worn just so he doesn't accidently pick up every pair of gloves that he runs across.

While he was sleeping last night, Spirit_Bull had a dream. In his dream, he found an ethereal four socketed crystal sword. It sparkled and glowed like a moonbeam! He marveled at such a beautiful implement of death. Then he transformed it into a Spirit Sword and it truly became the weapon of death that its glorious aura foretold. In his dream, it did not wear out. However, on waking, he realized that the only way to use that beautiful weapon was to put his own name on it. He has all the runes, so there is another possible personalization item (if he finds a 4 socketed sword!).

Wait, Spirit Swords aren't usable without personalization? Why not? Am I missing something here? :confused:

SpiritOfAnnaMay has dispatched of Andariel, sitting in Lut Gholein. It's been slow going, but the Countess did drop me a TAL, which I put in a 3 socket bow along with a couple gems and Fiona is killing much quicker.

I guess I was still asleep when I said that. Of course it is usable just because of the name. I had been thinking so hard about that beautiful weapon that I completely forgot about the name!!! Hey, Spirit_Bull could actually wield two of those. Now that is truly something to dream about.

Spirit_Bull has assembled the staff and is ready to go into the Palace. His score is:

Score = 744

At this point, Spirit_Bull was just about maxed out in gold, so he decided to gamble for gloves and belts. Almost immediately he found this:

Nothing special, but he can use the lightning resistance and the strength.

But there was still the question of the belt, so he kept on gambling. He found a couple nice plated belts, but they would only be usable after personalization. Finally he found the Wraith Lock sash. But it only had two levels for storing potions. Of course, the answer was obvious. Upgrade it!!!

Again, nothing special, but the strength and resistances come in handy. He now has full resistances for the rest of NM.

Now Spirit_Bull has a complete repairable outfit including three ethereals with self repair on them. Now his only obvious limitation is strength. He has enough charms to raise his 70 strength to about 85, so even that is OK for now. (Who said you couldn't play a Barbarian in this tournament?.... Oh, I guess that was more like: You cannot guardian a Barbarian in this tournament. Well that is yet to be seen!)

Spirit_Bull has bulled is way through Duriel. He moved back from P5 tp P1 to kill the beast, but he did it without losing his bowyer merc or going back to town.

I sense that some of you are getting a bit frustrated. If so, take heart, things really begin to drop in NM. Here is my latest find:

The Spirit Shroud Ghost Armor

I had to get out a few strength charms to equip it, but it should add to the killing level for a while. Spirit_Bull has only 50 regular strength points, but he gets 32 more from various equipment and charms.

But not all my finds have been this good. I had a poor pair of rare ethereal self repair boots with +1 to dexterity and nothing else at all. I decided to gamble for boots at the end of act 2 NM. I spent about 600,000 gold and this is all that I got:

Oh well, at least they can be repaired.

Now Spirit_Bull only has one ethereal piece of armor. That is the neat circlet that I mentioned way back. They will probably be with him for the duration.

Wraith_Flea has made good progress and is now chillin' in the Pandemonium fortress.

Act2:

Started gambling for the first time, found a few belts and 2 boots with proper names, but all were pretty much garbage.
Found this cool axe early on and decided it was worth putting an extra 10 points in dex.

Not much else to report here, the dire wolves are pretty much owning everything. p8 Duriel killed about 5-6 wolves and some vines, but never got the merc.

Act 3:
Continued gambling and found a minor upgrade to the belt, that at least had some cold resists. Things are still very safe, and the wolves are only getting more and more of an edge over things. I was going to use my Bear for the first time VS meph but it proved to be unnecessary. He got 3 wolves and 1 vine, and he probably would not have even gotten those if I hadn't gotten to close to the blood lord pack up above. Nothing useful dropped in this act, but I did gamble some nice boots that are the current contender for my reward in act 5:

I did find a nice eth druid helm that has +3rabies, +2 Dire wolf, +2 werebear. I use it on occasion if I am in a potential stair trap to turn to a bear, and for pre-buffing my wolves, it will likely occupy my stash for most of the game until I stop using wolves. I have found a few "spirit" Druid helms, but none have had usefull mods yet, I will likely stash one away for my NM imbue, so it won't have to be eth.

The 5 str from alcor was nice, before that I wasn't even using a shield, but I am really looking forward to some more str points in act 4!

Angela is now a destroyer. She took act V on /p3, and did cows on /p8. She personalized the rather nice boots she'd gambled before, and punched holes in an ethereal breastplate, hoping to be able to put something like treachery or lionheart in it at some point down the road. She's had the runes to make a strength claw for some time, and did make a strength polearm for her merc, but the only ethereal 2os base she's found yet is a katar she found in act I, and she's not wasting the runes on that thing.

Most of her equipment is still ethereal, but most items are not in danger of breaking. The one exception is her 3-slot belt, which has only 4/9 durability.

She found a couple of ethereal 3os mace-class weapons while doing cows, so she's leaning towards making 'black' rather than 'strength', and really the only thing stopping her is a lack of an Io. With that in mind, she'll be crossing her fingers as she does her countess runs.
