@Luhkoh @ffs Yup, you guys are right about the Lister runs, which should be the most effective way to gain experience before level 98. I say "should", because I have never actually done any Lister runs with single player barbarian on P8 . Nonetheless, I´d say that Csing could be a fair alternative to Lister runs. I will post the experience gained per level by Csing with Brute if I find a proper gear and then we can compare the results. I´d guess that exp gain from Csing would be 10-25% lower than from Lister runs.

I am not sure about the P1/P7 CS runs by the way. Is it worth it? With berserker you´d have to wield your sword 4-8 extra times if you do P8/P7 runs, which adds few extra seconds, but everything else would be unchanged more or less.

In the meanwhile, I´d like to introduce a new hero or hmmm ... his brother ... It is quite difficult to adjust the gameplay from "I am invincible" to "Holy Moly, they are lightning enchanted ... Run!!!" ... and I managed to rip him once already

Been running LK quite a bit these last few days for Enigma. I really want to get this over with.

After yesterday's Sur posted above, we quickly found 2x Vex, but then hit another long drought. Still, a few more good dmg charms drops did their best to keep me somewhat motivated, although the long stretches without any meaningful runes were frustrating at times. But then a poppable delivered his second Ber:



He could now make Enigma when cubing up from Lo and below. However, he's only one Sur away from cubing it from Sur/Ber only, keeping 2x Lo worth of runes for Griefs (or CtAs for future HC chars). So I think I'll keep running a bit more in hopes of getting the missing Sur soon. If it becomes too frustrating, I can always resort to cubing from lower runes.

His dmg charm collection is pretty crazy, basically can fill the whole inventory with sharp and fine charms, many of which with life or other good secondary stats. I honestly just intended to go Singer/MF with him for a long time after getting Enigma, and try to not kill him. But except for Grief bases and some basic Meph gear, things like Trav and Baal runs are definitely possible. So I'm thinking in case he does live until tourneys like RFL and MFO come along, his charm collection should prove a surprisingly good WW inventory.

I know Iam pretty far away from 98 and running nila but i wanted to know if I should look for some specific gear on my way to 98.
I guess I will go with whatever items I have at my disposal. Since I still havent found highlords, using a iDr amulet seems logical. If i manage to get a good iDr circle I try it out or stick with gulli.
Would i make sense to socket gulli with a sol rune? Or should I rather go with an um rune or ed jewel?

Sick progess in Lk @ffs . Getting them runes so fast.

My pala still has 2 sur runes left to get his enigma. I do some Lk runs with him whenever i need a break from baal runs. I will probably post his lk progress when he manages to complete this enigma.

Great Progress @ffs and I agree about sticking it out for another Sur. Those two Los are quite nice to have pocketed.

@Pax1990 I think it's worth seeing what you've gathered when you get there. I found the Guillame's socket worth it for my Barb. I went ED on Baal, except brief pTopaz for MFO, and back to that for Nihl, as the extra 7 iDR don't seem worth it for extra damage and stats possible for jewel. But as others noted, Larzuk can give 1-2 sockets to magic iPDR circlet. Also, I found the Cham in my merc's Andy's enormously helpful for Baal runs, so that's potentially worthy of a socket if you have both to speed up the progress to 98. Good luck!

That approach definitely worked for me, minus Highlords. But the IAS wasn't needed, or much in the way of deadly strike (he was only 14% below 100% combined DS/CS without it, if I recall correctly). I think it's definitely worth testing out to see if you prefer a little iPDR (and any FR the amulet provides) to the slight improvement in damage. Good luck!

Decided to go for a Mage Plate to get a little extra defense over the LP and BP options. My first HC Enigma:



Other drops below, including another Lo. Glad I waited for the Sur, he now has 2x Lo and enough runes for 2x CtA stashed for future use.

That concludes LK for now. It may have seemed fast, but actually I just ran a lot these last days/week. Unfortunately I forgot to use run counter in the beginning and then didn't bother to start using it later. Overall I'd estimate the whole thing took somewhere around 35 hours of running.

Since he's still in WC spec and has a hard time killing Meph quickly, and he needs some nice weapon runeword bases, I think it makes sense to first hit the Pit at P1 or P3 to farm some gear. Looking in particular for 5os Phase Blades and an eth elite polearm to upgrade Merc's Insight Bill. Meph may be on the agenda after that, if Pit doesn't deliver the S&Us he needs.

I'm having a terrible time in LK with my necro. I just get 2/3 shot by everything and anything puts me in fhr animation. Gladly I completed the Council quest during the playthrough, so I don't need to worry about one type of monster in LK, but the birds, leapers and the big dudes are just murdering me. I decided to go back to NM cows to try and get an exceptional poleaxe base for Insight and an armor base for Treachery and get myself a HF merc so enemies in LK concentrate on him instead of me. I tried using Clay Golem for the same purpose, but with just one point invested in that skill it can't really do much more than me against monsters on /p7. I spoke with @Bewitch and he suggested to use Terror, which would mean to respec since I'd need to gain two lvls to use it otherwise. I haven't used any respecs yet, but since I haven't really decided what to do with this guy, I've been wanting to save them just in case. What do you guys think is the best approach?

@PhineasB @ffs I was going to do this via PM with you two, but it's better that this is here in case someone wants to run LK with a necro some day XD... it can happen to anyone!

Yeah Necro is pretty fragile, I died a few times in LK before making CtA. Does he already have Harmony? That made things easier because he could outrun most monsters, and IIRC I also used life charms before CtA. I used Clay Golem, too, can't remember if I used any curses though. Most important thing (apart from 2 fires near WP) for non-Sorc chars is really a reasonably empty map IMO, as in not too many monsters spawning along the route. If your map is full of monsters in inconvenient locations, it might be worth rolling another one.

Btw as a general thought regarding LK with non-Sorc chars: Been chatting with @Luhkoh about poppables other than chests and playing around with a spreadsheet he made for that purpose. I find it interesting because typicall you're also looking for other stuff like runeword bases when first running LK untwinked, and it appears it is barely worse for runes either to hit them if you have lots of them along the path. Overall it's definitely worth hitting many of those IMO. In my case they provided Ber, 2x Lo, Vex, 2x Gul and Ist to the overall haul this time around.

@Kinkara hm thats a tough situation.
I think the fastest solution would be to use the respec. Buff the golem, get the curses and mabey bone armor. and then try to get harmony asap. ofc this way you should stick with lk until you get enigma. that leaves you with 2 respecs. After that you should have no problem farming tokens.

As for Anger, today was a big day.
At level 96 and 65% he finally got this Highlords Wrath from baal himself.
Man Iam super happy and excited about that drop.
It took a couple of dia runs to get the missing essence to build a token and respec the missing str and dex from maras.
I lost a little bit of res and health but man it was worth it. I can feel the damage increase. Runs feel so much faster now and I managed to push my run times sub 3:30. My fastest run was 3:02. Feels amazing.

Yes he does have Harmony even before starting LK Maybe I should respec and use the curses. I don't think I will use many respecs, but I wanted to try and save ancients for lvl 98 somehow and save myself some hours off the Nihla grind, so I'd preffer not to relly on essensse farming.

I tried to get a low monster density map, but I'm having trouble just rolling a two camp fire one. I feel like it was so easy with the barb haha I miss him already

I got a shitty 4os normal polearm and a 3os armor. I could try and see if a NM defensive merc works. @ffs did you run LK with a merc? Or just the golem... I could also use the Valk that Harmony provides, but if I need to tele away from a pack or if the route I take in LK needs teleporting at least once it'll become rapidly annoying to have to summon her all the time... not to mention the repairing of the charges.

Just checked the posts were I reported LK runes with my Necro and indeed I ran with Merc. HF should help in slowing monsters down for sure.

@Kinkara my necro ran without merc or golem, and eventually had CtA, which kept runs smoother. He also used terror and decrep, per my screenshots from that stretch. I recall using decrep to retrieve a runedrop, but I think terror was much more prevalent. Also, @ffs nailed it about map, as his didn't have too many spawns in/around huts as the rune drop screenies show. But he also died a fair bit, to the point I stopped tracking deaths during his time in LK. But not every fifth run or the like as you described. He also was probably higher level (lvl 82 according to the write up/linked posts), because he quested through to Anya quest as Fishymancer before settling into LK. I think that likely helped his survivability also.

@Kinkara I'll throw in my uninformed 2c as well and ask what level you are? This is only barely related, but when I run LK with twinked chars its always a 200fcr sorc with no cta and like 1k life. I found at lvl ~80 i was dying all the time. I leveled up to 87 and then went back and rarely ever died. So my main rec is lvling up if youre not in the high 80s. Otherwise, respec to terror, full bone armor, and max block. Then you'll surely be ok(ish).

Welp I just died at 78% BUT I managed to retrieve my body. Yeah only 2.5% lost.


Is it possible that Wave 2 is sometimes bugged? I swear to god 90% of the time this wave is no problem but sometimes they
hit so hard I have to use 2 full rejuvs every run. I dont know whats up with that. And iam not talking about individual runs and nasty mods. I mean game sessions where they are super strong ever run no matter what mods.
They just insta killed me this time. I had no time to react. Seems super weird to me.

Anyways 2.5% exp loss is really not that bad and iam sure I will hit level 97 in 3-4 days.

Another update on Revenge, who is now lvl 91 and has become my first Guardian!

After leaving LK, we ran the Pit until lvl 89. Runs were done P1 and he horked like crazy, basically everything that was around bosses and their minions. Just wanted to milk things and make use of FI "pretending" it's P7, given I was looking for runeword bases and lots of S&Us.

S&Us:
His first highly sought after item came quickly with Shako from a random mob. Then he was quite lucky with lots of items for WW spec: Arreat's (5 LL), Reaper's (low dmg, non-eth), Raven, Goblin Toe, LoH, Gravepalm for Baal's second wave (no Ghoulhide yet) and luckily a quick Andy's (8 LL) for Merc.

Things started out okay when the first PB that dropped got 5 sockets in cube, and was quickly turned into Grief:



Not the best roll, but of course good enough.

Unfortunately, his good luck with PBs seems to have ended right then and there. The next eight plain PBs got 1-4 or 6 sockets, and 2-3 grey ones that showed up on the ground were the same kind of trolls. I was itching to make use of all those Sharp and Fine charms I found and get a few levels at Baal, so this was/is quite frustrating. At one point I decided I'd settle for an Oath as second weapon, and when an eth CS dropped with 4os, it was turned into one:



Bad roll, even less impressive than the average Grief, but I didn't bother rerolling it as it's just an interim solution until that second 5os PB comes along.

At least he was a little more lucky with eth elite polearms. First eth base (CA) rolled 5 sockets and was turned into Obedience to smack Meph down a little faster (now basically redundant though). The second one was a CV that got 4 sockets, and was promptly turned into Insight. Kept the first roll for now as the only downside is its average CS roll:



After making Guardian, we used his 2nd quest respec to get into WW mode. Baal runs were fine, but a little uneasy at times. So we first gained two levels (89-91) doing P8 Pindle runs, just to beef up a little bit more. Now he's using a mix of life and damage charms to get him close to 5k life after BO. If I feel comfortable, I will swap in more damage charms going forward.

Current setup is 3 sharp GCs with life and cold dmg, 1 fine SC with life, with life on all other charms.

After BO he currently has 4730 life, 18% DR, and 75/46/71/44 resist on WW switch.

To dos:
First some Baal/wave running. Wish me luck. I'm sure he'll die eventually, but I don't wanna give Lister the satisfaction!

In terms of items he needs, for WW spec there are actually only two meaningful upgrades remaining: 5os PB for second Grief, and HLW. Other than that his WW gear is already really nice. Gore/WT wouldn't hurt, but Goblin Toe is just fine given I include Baal in my runs for now.

Planning to continue Baal at least 93 so that he can start crafting amulets. Maybe even lvl 95 or so if I feel comfortable doing the runs, which I may not. Once I'm either 93+, or bored, or too scared to run Baal, I'll take him back to the Pit as Singer and farm some more. In Singer spec he had 5.2k life and was essentially unkillable, which is were I feel I should be with HC chars personally. There were a couple of S&Es at Lister already, so I don't feel 100% comfortable there yet. Nothing that could be considered an NDE yet, though.. let's hope it stays that way!

Also, welcome to the new (and returning) runners, great progress so far! That was some fast rune-finding @ffs , glad to see another HC entrant! Congrats as well on your first Guardian, always so nice to see.

First, some housekeeping.

Lister runs have done us well so far. They've been easily the most efficient runs, but now it's time to see if adding in Baal can help us out efficiency-wise. Using the runtimes I have currently, p8/p3 Baal runs have officially become more efficient than straight Lister runs by a small-ish margin at this level (~5 hours total difference over the level), but it's time to see if I can find a way to decrease the time it takes for me to kill Baal, specifically without compromising my wave kill-times.

The easiest way to not compromise wave times is to switch gear right before Baal. Doesn't cost any time in the run since I have to wait for him to leave the throne anyways. This also makes it great for testing, as it removes all variables other than the actual Baal fight itself.

So I cubed up my two Ists and used my one remaining Vex from his Council days to make this, my thinking being the high CB would help with some whittling:

Nice! I now had a few different gear setups to test to see if I could whittle some time away from the Baal fight. Remember, Stevesy is NOT a fast character, so keep that in mind with these comparisons. It's all relative.

Times (from the moment I enter the portal):

Death BA mainhand: ~69s
Clegs gloves+Nos Coil (enough slow to immobilize Baal so as to not rely on the mercs Decrep): ~64s
Beast mainhand: ~75s
Normal (Grief mainhand) setup: ~53s

Well... it was worth a shot, but it turns out Grief is the most effective by a fair margin. I expected as much, but it was worth it to try other things and make sure either way. It's also easiest this way as I don't have to bother with any weapon swapping nonsense. One other thing I checked was if I could do Diablo runs (p1/p7) fast enough to make it worthwhile, but they were also too slow at this stage.

p8/p3 Baaling it is!

For the record, I also tested Zerking (in SC as per @ffs' request ) and I didn't notice an appreciable difference. It also felt a little wrong not being in wolf-form after so long in it, so I'm gonna put that on the shelf for now and maybe test it further on another char.

I've also been messing around with doing the first 2 waves on /p1. It's less efficient time-wise but feels smoother since I don't have to chase down skellies as much, so I alternate between that and full p8 when I feel like it. With Baal in the mix now I thought that S/U finds might actually (sort of) be a thing!

I was wrong. Not surprising with sub-100 MF though. So while he did find some stuff like facets, reapers, gheeds, warshrike there were next to no actually exciting S/U finds to speak about. He did, however, find some rocks, and almost replaced the ones he used in that Death. Nothing too fancy, but just enough to keep the motivation going for those countless hours in the Throne.

That carried him through to 97.5, where he sits now. I feel like I went pretty hard on him over the break, so I think I'll step back for a bit from him now so as to not fully burn out on Baaling. He'll still be progressing, just not as quickly as this last stint.

How long does one complete baalrun take?

Current run setup is as follows:

/p1: Throne + first two waves.
/p8: Waves 3 through 5
/p3: Baal

Around 4:15-4:20 or so for the full run typically, though it does dip below the 4 minute mark if things go really well (mostly with the Baal fight and being able to layer the waves with Delerium). He certainly won't be winning any prizes for speed, but the runs are extremely consistent and safe so I can basically autopilot and chip away at the XP bar without worry.
