I must admit nowadays I'm firmly a PoE player and only occasionally getting back to D2 whenever there's some interest in PvP. That being said, I do have a goal and that is to participate in MFO and RFL once these come around. :) Last year I barely had time to play when these events happened.

I would make it in a low-req base. For PvM purposes, the most interesting use cases for Beast are rather about chars like for example Bear Sorc or some Necro build (Summoner or PN), who typically don't have that much str/dex. The only char I have that uses a Beast in an elite axe is PvP WW Barb...

Oops. With the exception of my 1.14 PvP characters and occasional farming to improve them, I essentially switched to HC when D2R came around. To my own surprise I managed to finish 15 straight Guardians without a death. But now, apparently it wasn't the best idea to get back into HC D2...

Pretty much what you said. Re facets, I'd agree Meph doesn't make sense to run unless you're starting out and in need of some of those more common S&Us. Otherwise Travincal is way to go 100% to also get a bunch of goodies such as rings, runes and the occasional charms and magic/rare jewels ...
