The Journey
The Beginning
As you may know, I’ve started one of each character about two years ago in hardcore mode, and I was initially just looking for some different ways of killing mobs. The amazon basically started as an untwinked character (including a first attempt that died at NM travincal to fire enchanted), but when I learnt about GoMule, I decided to share all the items my characters found. She went to hell as an untwinked character, but when another character found the glorious eth titans and as my first rare find on my Paladin was a griffons, I decided to make her a twinked one. This was also the time when I decided that I would want to try to focus my efforts on a single character, and thus the real beginning of my 99 attempt.

Pindle & Eldritch (<94)
Once reaching hell and completing the important Anya quests etc., there was really only one thing that made sense to do. Up until ~94, the playstyle was enter game, visit eldritch and pindle, rinse, repeat. Simple as that.

Baalruns (lvl 94-98)
At 94 I made the move to baalruns. During this time I had also picked up some additional good charms, and I felt more safe in case of souls as I found my tgods. I had also managed to obtain my first Enigma and Infinity (eth CV), as my sorceress had been so kind as to do thousands of LK runs. Here the recipe was again rather simple. Roll a good map, teleport to throne, rinse, repeat. I actually also killed Baal from 95 onwards, just for the fun of it (and potential drops).

CS runs (lvl 98-99)
For the last level, I tested baalruns vs CS runs. I stayed the hell away from Nihlatak, as I didn’t have the balls to attempt it. I rather quickly decided that P1/P7 CS runs was the way for me, and although I did have some interesting S/E’s with might and fanaticism surprises, I managed to keep her alive till the very end. I decided on a more slow approach, also killing the majority of the bosses on the way, both to feel more safe but also for potential grail items. From here on out, it was just one long grind with thousands of diablo kills.

Other noteworthy finds
During her 99 attempt, she found not one, not two, but THREE unique Sacred Armors. Needless to say, none of them were Tyreal’s Might (ilvl 85, 87 and 88).
I had never seen a Zod rune drop before, so I was quite pleased when Diablo himself decided to offer me one.
She also found a decent Death’s Web (2/47/9/11) and many grail items (eth and non-eth) that were missing for me. Among others, she found a perfect Thunderstroke and a perfect Lightsabre.
In total, she has brought my grail counter down to 13 missing items (12 if you count eth Lenymo – what are the odds?)
She has brought my grail perfection to:

Conclusions
I really enjoyed taking her all the way. I’m so happy that she made it to 99 without dying, and for me, she will stay in my hall of fame forever. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of throwing one javelin and seeing everything disappear in front of me. That skill is so OP.
I’ve been very much inspired by all the 99’er stories that I’ve found in this forum, and think the community does so well in sharing stories from a single player game. I’m a big fan. The grind was real, but I am afraid I could end up doing it again. After all, there are 6 more characters waiting to be played.

But now I've gone and started at the end. Perhaps introductions are in order. May I present:

Patriarch Helm-Hammerhand, 1.11b Twinked* Hammerdin

This character has been my sole gaming project for the last 10 1/2 months and the reason I came back to Diablo II. All the who, what, why, where, and when of this project (including where/how) the gear was found) was already presented in great detail in my 18k LK thread. So, to prevent excessive repetition, how about we just do a quick Q & A here:

Q: Does the name mean anything?
A: Helm Hammerhand is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. Back when 1.11b was the present patch all the Bnet hammerdins seemed to incorporate the word 'hammer' into their names. I very much like the world of Middle Earth and so borrowed the name to keep with the 1.11b naming tradition.

Q: Why 1.11b?
A: 1.11b was the current patch when I started playing Diablo II. All my perceptions about how Diablo II should be are based on this starting point. When I decided to restart playing Diablo II after a six year break I figured why not restart at my starting point?

Q: Why a Hammerdin?
A: Hammerdins were the end all be all characters of 1.11b. 10k per hammer magic damage that suffers no immunities and has great AoE. What's not to like? Of course the 10k per hammer magic damage only comes with good gear. Back when 1.11b was present patch I was but a poor newb playing self found on Battle.net. I made a Hammerdin back in the day but without the needed high runes it seemed but an empty shell ... Now as a player who knows much more I was able to do things the right way here in Single Player.

Q: What's up with the 'Twinked*' description?
A: It's a twinked character but I started in 1.11b with nothing and for the sole purpose of creating this character. But first, I needed the gear and so I created a Sorceress to farm the basics at Mephisto and then do the 18k P3 LK runs, and 8k p5 LK runs needed to get the high runes for my Enigma, HotO, CTA, and merc's Fort. So twinked, but by a purpose built character doing mission specific runs. I'd say that's good enough for an asterisk.

Helm's gear is all pretty straightforward cookie cutter stuff. Beyond having an Enigma in 1.11b the most notable stuff is the perfect (non-superior) defense Sacred Targe with +45 base resistances (racked on my 18k run LK map), and the +40 life PCombat GC (found in the CS). The rare ring is an ongoing source of disappointment. It was the best ring I had before I created Helm and after leveling him to 99 and spending all my excess gold gambling rings ... it's still the best ring I have ... for now ...).

The Merc's gear was the big surprise for me. I did an extra ~3k LK runs to end up with enough runes for both Enigma and Fortitude but then didn't use the Fortitude all that much. It's a great armor no doubt, but when running Baal I preferred to have the crushing blow and open wounds on the Duress. Then when running CS I didn't want the extra enhanced damage from the Fortitude so I ended up creating the Gloom for more stacked resistances while still hitting greater than 3k defense. I don't recall using a Gloom before but now I have to endorse it. The extra resistances were quite helpful with all the Lower Resistance and Conviction happening in the CS, the defense is great, and much to my surprise, even with a Holy Freeze aura and a field of hammers flying, the ctc Dim Vision still made itself felt from time to time.

July 15, 2020: Growing dissatisfaction with Lord of the Rings Online's endgame mechanics leads my departure. MF Sorceress is created.
July 22, 2020: First post at new forum where amongst many other things I said: I'm playing around with the idea of working towards creating a bnet worthy hammerdin in 1.11b.
August 12, 2020: I committed to creating my Hammerdin! I stopped running Mephisto, started running LK, and found a Ber Rune in the RoF all in one day! That Ber Rune (and its amazing timing) was, is, will probably always be, my greatest DII find. Today it sits proudly in the bottom socket of my Enigma and always makes me smile when I move my cursor over it.
October 6, 2020: After 18,260 P3 LK runs, I have the runes to create my Enigma, HotO, and Merc Fort.
November 4, 2020: After more than 8k P5 LK runs I decide to cube all my Mal+ runes to create a CTA. Helm-Hammerhand is born!
November 11, 2020: After using Helm-Hammerhand to farm for an exotic base for a CTA for a week I decide on a crystal sword and Helm sets off to level. (He's clvl 88 at this point and starts doing p7 start to end Baal runs)
December 1, 2020: Helm reaches clvl 96 doing p7 start to end Baal runs.

Thoughts:

I'm reminded of the Jack Sparrow line from Pirates of the Caribbean: 'Did everyone see that? Because I will not be doing it again.'

From 2006-2014 I created close to one hundred Patriarchs/Matriarchs/Guardians. This is my first character to reach clvl 99. This was also my first character to reach clvl 98. And yes, this was also my first character to do anything more than reach clvl 97. In short, high clvl leveling has never been my thing. I'm more the kind of player that conceives a character on Friday, plays it through the game on Saturday and Sunday, does some runs Monday through Thursday, and then starts again with the next one.

But this character was different. This character was the dream character going back to 2006. And it did not disappoint! The triumph of finding the gear was great. The nostalgia of running Baal with a Hammerdin was great. And the power ... the power was great! I still get a kick of teleporting up to magic immunes and knocking them over like they're made of paper.

In short, I set out to create one of the most powerful characters Sanctuary has ever seen and I do believe I have succeeded. A powerful area of effect caster that suffers no immunities, now all but free from death itself! And so, one last time, may I present to you:
